The storage of energy involves converting energy from types that are difficult to store into forms more convenient and/or economical to store that can later be recovered for use. Pumped hydro accounts for around 99% of total global energy storage at present.
Some technologies are better suited to provide short-term energy storage, while others can provide for much longer storage. The type of technology used will depend on the circumstances, amount to be stored and duration of storage required.
